Peter Oppermann, Ph.D.

I am a licensed clinical psychologist and certified group psychotherapist. I have been a practicing psychotherapist since 1982. I received my doctorate from the Wright Institute in Berkeley, CA. In addition to my private practice, I have held positions as supervisor, intake coordinator and as clinical director of a graduate psychology internship program. For the past five years I have also devoted myself to the care of the elderly as a consultant to retirement homes and skilled nursing facilities. I provide evaluations, counseling and support to seniors and physically and mentally challenged individuals. I also make myself available to their families and caregivers, providing psycho-education and teaching them better coping skills and avoiding burnout. In addition to that, I have given and continue to give talks on various subjects, including "how to age successfully", "coping with dementia and depression", overcoming fear of success", effective parenting of adolescents", and "building and maintaining intimate relationships.

My private practice includes teenagers, individual adults, couples, families and groups" of many different walks of life and ethnicity. I specialize in helping people overcome addictions, anxiety and depression. I also teach ways by which to understand and manage one's illness, chronic pain and stress. My focus is on mastering life's major challenges such as leaving home, transitioning from one culture to another, marriage, divorce and grief.

I am committed to helping people feel more "real" and finding a language by which to communicate more effectively with others. The groups which I also offer help people turn their isolation into connectedness. My other goal in being a therapist is to assist in the achievement of dreams in career and love relationships.
