Marilyn Stettler, MFT

Marilyn Stettler, MFT offers marriage counseling and individual psychoanalytic psychotherapy. Marilyn has been a licensed Marriage and Family therapist since 1979 with a full time practice in San Francisco, Davis and Castro Valley. Trained in design at the University of Michigan, she worked in that field until earning her Masters in Clinical Counseling.

In 2001 she completed a three year postgraduate training program earning a certificate from the Masterson Institute in Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy.

While maintaining a general practice working with adults , she has special clinical interest in helping individuals change personality patterns, that while originally developed for protection and survival, now interfere with self-esteem and self-expression. With couples she arrives at a diagnostic understanding of each individual to help them change the ways they use their differences and personality styles in self-protective maneuvers that prevent the collaborative and intimate relationships they would like.

Concerned about the destruction of longer term therapy by managed care Marilyn was one of the founding members of the California Coalition for Ethical Mental Health Care (CCEMHC), serving on their board of directors for six years.
